Avenyo, Elvis & Gideon Ndubuisi, Oct 2020, Coping During COVID-19: Family Businesses and Social Assistance in Nigeria, Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), London, The COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent Government-imposed restrictions have altered the way of life around the globe. Using the newly “Nigeria Baseline COVID-19 National Longitudinal Phone Survey 2020”, this paper contributes to the nascent literature on the Economics of COVID-19 by examining the impact of changes in income and social assistance due to the pandemic on the coping strategies of family business owners. We find that family business owners who experienced a reduction in income and those that received social assistance due to the pandemic are likely to increase their coping level. We discuss the policy implications of these findings, More information

Kemp, René & Joost van Haaften, Oct 2020, The 4B’s: Follow Bauhaus to build back a better world, Looking to the post-pandemic future, we explain how a design-based approach known as ‘Bauhaus’ can be used to build back something truly better: starting with a socially stronger and fairer Europe combined with a low-carbon economy. Here we mean two things by the word ‘design’. First, a practice of designers for aesthetic products that last a long time. Second, social design as a partnership for multiple value creation, i.e. design for people by people. City authorities, planners, architects, students, investors, cooperatives and partnerships for multiple value creation will be key actors in this transformative programme, More information

Laar, Mindel van de , Sep 2020, E-resilience in education: A conceptual framework, The COVID-19 health crisis pushed the education sector into online education, challenging both students and teachers to work with technological devices and software instead of joining face-to-face meetings. However, providing education online does not mean actual learning will take place. This policy brief presents a framework to visualise the e-resilience of the educational system, including ICT-related factors withinrnthe educational systems that determine capacity of that system and actors in the system to deal with shocks. Policymakers and educations providers should be mindful about the various levels or ‘layers’ within society, as inequality in each of the levels may increase because of lower e-resilience at that level, More information
